Know Your Criminals - The Surprising Face of Modern Burglars
Friday, 14 February 2014 | OLS Staffer
When most people think of a burglar, they think of the caricature of a shifty looking man with a mask and a bag labelled “swag”. In truth, burglars come in all shapes and sizes. In around 31% of cases, a burglar knows their victim well, and in another 19% of cases, the burglar is at least acquainted to their victim. This is a particularly interesting statistic because it means that burglars may like to get to know people and find out when their homes are likely to be vacant, before they strike.
Most burglars work alone, but it is not unheard of for them to work in pairs, or even packs of three or four. The majority of burglars (85%), are male, but women do commit the crime too, and are sometimes part of those aforementioned burglary teams.
The majority of burglars are aged between 16 and 24. Only ten percent of burglars are under the age of 16, and by age 40 most people seem to have dropped their life of crime, as mature burglars account for just twelve percent of cases.
