Bye Bye Love!

2 CommentsTuesday, 2 June 2015  |  Toni

As we reported last year, love locks are a growing phenomenon in cities across the world.  To recap, the trend is for you and your loved one to fasten a padlock with your names on it to a structure and then throw the key away, thus sealing your love for all eternity. Or something like that!

Unfortunately, it appears they are finally becoming a problem.  Paris officials have begun the removal of nearly a million locks from the Ponts Des Arts Bridge this week.  Last years railing collapse, caused by the extra weight, has sparked fears for the integrity of the whole bridge and the railings and 45 tonnes of extra weight are being ripped out.  The railings will be replaced with plexi-glass to prevent future lovers from starting the trend all over again.

Now is it just me, but the fact that humans have this irresistible urge to want to jump on a trend to show their undying love kind of makes me reach for the bucket! Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a romantic gesture to melt the heart of the one you love, but surely, everyday actions and interaction along with those knowing looks that make your belly flip are all the gestures that truly count? Padlocks on bridges and money spent on 'stuff' in general are ways young souls fill the void of not knowing what it is to open your heart to what really makes memories, honest committed openness of feeling for that one special person. Symbolic gestures are fine, but true commitment of feeling albeit risky for the heart, is the difference between tapping your foot to the top 40 because the herd told you it's cool and finding that underground club where the music makes you so lifted, you suddenly realise what it is to be alive! But like i said...maybe it's just me! Just a thought.

Paris is the City of Love, and millions of couples visit for that reason. Millions of couples meet and fall in love there and do crazy things for that reason.
When you first fall in love, it's an almost feral feeling, where desire drives you. You want to let the world know how much you love this person.
I think the Paris City Council should build a structure to accommodate these peaceful people wanting to create a monument to love. One that will withstand the weight of so much love.
